Date(s) - 21/03/2020 - 22/03/2020
Calamvale Hotel Conference Centre
Bonsai Horizons III (BH III) is on Saturday and Sunday 21 and 22 March 2020. Again the theme is ‘Sharing bonsai knowledge and friendship’. As the theme suggests it is a week-end of bonsai for all clubs, especially those in the south-east Queensland region. The participation in and ownership of BH III by all clubs is the objective. As with the previous two years, BH III is a wonderful addition to the bonsai calendar.
The successful format of the past two years will remain the same, but there will be lots of fresh faces. We are pleased to have the expertise of Sam Thompson from the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection, Canberra and Shane Boyce from Tasmania.
This year there will be the Bonsai Horizons Trophy – $150 cash prize – a new competition for attendees. To enter you should provide a photo of your bonsai on or before 29 February 2020 for pre-selection. Up to five (5) of the best bonsai will be chosen to be displayed at BH III. If you are successful in pre-selection, you will be asked to bring your tree along. The winner will be selected based on the votes of attendees on the week-end. Each attendee will have one vote for the week-end.
On Friday 20 March there will be the welcome dinner from 6 pm.
On Saturday from 8.30 am to 12.30 pm – Lindsay Bebb will demonstrate bonsai refinement, including a discussion on attendee’s bonsai. Marie Hewartson will conduct an advanced pottery workshop. Sam will conduct a workshop.
On Saturday afternoon from 1 pm to 3.00 pm:
• Shane will conduct a presentation on viewing stones
• Glen Bebb will give a short talk on diaza-making
• Sam’s workshop will continue
• James Todd will conduct a tutorial on kusamono and companion plants.
From 3.00 pm to 5.30 pm Sam will demonstrate using a black pine, which will be auctioned there and then. If you like it, you can buy it. The black pine has provenance and is a most interesting tree.
Saturday night dinner from 6.30 pm.
Sunday 8.30 am to 10.30 am Shane will conduct a bonsai and penjing workshop.
Lindsay Bebb will conduct a session on bonsai refinement.
From 10.30 am to 12.30 pm there will be the south-east bonsai festival in which bonsai artists from local clubs will have a round robin demonstration, facilitated by Glen Bebb. Shane will conduct a workshop.
Shane will demonstrate from 1 pm to 4 pm.
Based on the programme, the week-end will be an opportunity to relax, listen and interact with a range of bonsai artists. You will have plenty of time to work on your own trees, either by yourself or with the help of an expert tutor.
BH III, as a trans-club event will be held on the top floor of the Calamvale Hotel, 678 Compton Rd, Calamvale. The venue has served the event well the past two years and we predict that the standard will be maintained this year.
Full week-end registration is $125 for early bird payment before or on 31 January 2020 and $140 after 31 January. You can choose the single day registration for $75 – anytime up to and including 11 March 2020. The reasonable prices include lunch and morning tea, both of which have been exceptional. There has been plenty of quality food available over extended times. To finalise arrangement with the hotel we must close registrations at the close of business 11 March 2020.
Accommodation is available at the venue, so you can have a bonsai getaway weekend. Call the Calamvale Hotel on 3273 4777 or book through your favourite accommodation website.
